Apple Cake

This is Tyler's favorite dessert of his Grandmother's.  I made it for Dave to celebrate his new job when the Cate's came out to visit!  It is super yummy (and relatively healthy, minus the sauce...).  I halved the sauce since it seemed like tons and we still had plenty.

Cake:
2 cups sugar
1 T butter (I know it seems like too little, but the moisture in the apples is all you need)
2 eggs
4 cups apples, shredded
2 cups flour
2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp nutmeg (It's a lot, but gives the cake that yummy spice flavor)
1 cup chopped nuts, optional

Cream sugar and butter; add eggs and beat hard.  Add apples.  Stir in dry ingredients and then add nuts.  Bake in a greased 9x13 at 350 degrees for 45 minutes.  (Mine didn't cook quite as long)

Sauce:
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
1 cup cream or canned milk
3 tsp vanilla
dash nutmeg

Heat butter, sugar and cream until blended- don't boil.  Add vanilla and nutmeg.

Serve cake warm, and add warm sauce on each piece when serving.  Yummy!
